Elliots Birth Story…

I wanted to record, so I could remember, the details of Elliots Birth.

The morning he was born, we were quite shocked to learn that he was coming, you see, we were not expecting him for another 3 weeks. His due date was January 25th.

Before his birth, we had had quite a busy few days. We celebrated the Christmas Season, Tuckers Birthday and Tuckers Birthday Party. We were all worn out from the busy-ness that had occurred. So a few days before he was born, I had been feeling pretty tired, and had been experiencing contractions. Which didn’t seem abnormal, considering how busy we were, and how much we were doing. The night before his birth,we went as a family to the store, and I had purchased the food to make freezer meals, we got home, put away the groceries, put the boys to bed, and I was so tired, and uncomfortable, I soaked in the tub to ease the pain, and then went to bed early. The next morning around 6:00 AM, I was awakened when my water broke. I was shocked, sat up, and woke up Christopher, saying, I think my water just broke. To which Christopher responded, are you sure? I wasn’t positive at first, (as we still had planned on doing so many things and almost a month to do it!), but shortly thereafter the strong contractions started, and I was positive Elliot was on his way!

I called the Doctor, who told us to come to the hospital (I’d never had my boys this early before, so I was feeling a little nervous). I then called my parents who started their journey from SLC, they too were a little shocked, and I think I will always remember the sound of my mom’s voice as I told her the news. While I was doing this Christopher ran around the house packing our hospital bag. Then I called our sweet neighbor to come over to watch the boys until my parents could get here. She was so willing, and for that, I will be always grateful.

pre
We arrived at the hospital, and got checked in, then admitted. At this point I was anticipating my labor to be similar to what was experienced with the previous two. Which was Short. So when I was asked if I wanted an Epidural, I declined, thinking my Labor would be the same as my previous two experiences. It soon became apparent that this time, my water broke which put me into labor INSTEAD of being in labor which broke my water, which presents a different labor experience.

We went to our labor and delivery room, where Christopher began to make a flurry of phone calls to family, and then to friends whom we had plans with that evening, and then a little later to his work, other church members to take over his church responsibilities, and the Relief Society President to take over the Enrichment Programs that had been planned for later that week. After those minor details were in place, we began to walk the halls, to encourage labor, again with my previous two, they were born a few short hours after my water broke. I was grateful for this extra time, to begin to wrap my mind around the upcoming arrival of our sweet Elliot. As mentioned I had intentions of preparing for his arrival both mentally and physically, over the next few weeks, so as we walked the halls of the hospital I was grateful for this extra time I had been given to prepare myself mentally for his arrival.

Christopher and I walked the halls together, for quite sometime, there was such an adrenaline rush pacing those halls, knowing that so soon we would be meeting the newest member of our family and trying to narrow down our long list of names to find the perfect one. We finally decided upon Elliot Christopher, and the timing was perfect, as we returned to the room, and the contractions became more frequent and harder.

The labor and delivery nurse called the doctor on call, as well as the 2 pediatric nurses, and the pediatric respiratory therapist, the extra people were there because of his early arrival. I remember thinking, there are alot of people here, but not really caring. Soon our little boy would be here.

At this point in the delivery process, I always begin to doubt my choice to have a natural child birth. And Christopher always says to me, ‘I am so proud of you Emily, you’re doing such a good job’ (to which I always think, he’s never given birth, how would he know that I am doing a good job?), but then always feeling grateful he is there by my side. Christopher is a tremendously supportive man, and he has been able to be there with all three children through the entire process, and I know it would have been different experience had he not been there.

Soon I was ready to push, and after about 30 minutes of pushing, Elliot made his appearance.

Blue faced and screaming. An image I will never forget.
blue

We were soon reassured the blue face was not from lack of oxygen but from bruising. After a through look over, he was pronounced a healthy little boy.

A blessed day full of many miracles.

We are Family…

For Primary last week the boys were encouraged to bring a small family photo or drawing to hang on our ward family tree that was located in the primary room.

When I read the note I realized, we didn’t have a family picture with all five of us in it!! Elliot is over 6 weeks old, but yet, we didn’t have a single snap shot with ALL of us in it. What?!?!

So over the next week I tried numerous times, and talked about it on several occasions, but somehow it just didn’t happen. So, when Sunday morning arrived (Christopher had already left for his early morning meetings, and wasn’t going to be home until right before church), I discussed our options with the boys, and they gladly decided they wanted to draw pictures, and I am so glad they did. Look at these precious family photos.

Trumans Family:

Tuckers Family:

I love children’s artwork, and it makes me smile to see how they view their world: Each of them at the center of their families, a very important place to be, and in my opinion, as it how it should be.

Having someone to Love…

Since having Elliot, I have been amazed by my boys. I can’t even begin to put it into words, how wonderful it is to see them love each other SO MUCH. It is a taste of what our Heavenly Father feels for us, I am sure.

The other day, Truman really wanted to be with Elliot. He was watching a movie on the laptop on our bed. I put Elliot next to him, but shortly after he began to fuss. I picked him up, and Truman said, once he’s happy again, can he come be with me again? I put Elliot down, and again he began to fuss, I picked him up and again Truman said, mom, PLEASE can he come back? So after a few tries, we gave Elliot the Binky and he was content. I ran to grab the phone, coming back to find this:
atogether
Tucker had wandered in, put his arm around Truman (and Truman still had his arm around Elliot).

It just made my little heart skip a beat. And it made me think…

When you have someone to love, and someone who loves you back, isn’t life so much more wonderful?
together
I think so.

Being Homebodies

Just a peek at some of the things we’ve been doing since Elliots birth, hanging out at home…

I have a beautiful life. And it’s been a beautiful 6 weeks, wouldn’t you agree?

A month already?

swaddled
I really can’t believe it’s been over a month since this sweet little one has entered our life!
sleeper
Parenthood is an amazing thing, and the more I parent, the more I am realizing that it just happens to quick. And so this time around in parenting Elliot, I am trying to take more time to enjoy this newborn phase, because I know from experience it goes by too quick.
lips
And even though I am trying to stop my boys from growing up, it is happening before my eyes. (With that being said, I am not only enjoying my infant,
oface
but also my preschooler,
truth
and kindergartner.)
tucker

This past month, has been so magical and wonderful. We have just ‘hunkered down’ at home, getting to know Elliot, trying to keep the germs away, enjoying adjusting to the new baby that has entered our home, and trying to figure out our new family dynamics.
sleep
We have really not left our home more than a handful of times with Elliot (for doctors appointments, and necessary things like that) and I love the time I have spent with my older boys. We have had some grand adventures. And they have been SO PATIENT with me and Elliot. I’d forgotten about newborn feeding schedules, diaper changes, and etc. While I have had to be taking care of ‘baby brother’ they have found their own adventures,
books
and a new found friendship with one another.
legos
They have shocked me with the love and kindness they exhibit.
notes
Of course, it’s not all perfect, they have little fights now and again, they are impatient with me not being able to put all three of them in my lap while I am nursing, or meeting everyone’s need when they want them met, but overall I have been so impressed with them and the way they have transitioned to ‘big brother-hood’.

Hopefully we’ll have many more months of this wonderfulness…

“The Best Christmas Ever”

According to Tucker this year/season was the ‘Best Christmas Ever’. And we wanted to document and record this wonderful season. This being said, feel free to stop reading now, as it is going to be a LONG post!
Obviously, I am WAY behind on my blogging. 🙂 I often blog during the boys quiet time or after they’ve gone to bed, but during the month of December, because I was pregnant and having contractions or just was exhausted, I would often go to bed early, or catch a nap while the boys were down. So Blogging just didn’t happen like I would have liked. So instead, I’m playing catch up! And here’s our Holiday Season Highlights.

* Making Christmas Ornaments for an ornament exchange

(The boys had alot of fun making the ornaments, and watching the mail for the others to come!)

* Putting up the fake tree
(Putting up this tree is always one of the first things we do when decorating the day before Thanksgiving, so it’s always a BIG DEAL. Tucker wanted to have a picture of every time we put a ‘layer’ of branches on the tree. It’s nice for the kids to have their own tree–they spent the month, moving around the ornaments, none were breakable, and they made their own ornaments to hang on it, and just enjoy ‘their’ tree. And I love the fact that Tucker is in shorts, and Truman is in his Hercules outfit. I love it.)

* Phillips Family Christmas Tree Hunt
As we look back on these pictures every year, It is always such a magical time. And you can see it in the pics…
I shot this at the beginning of the hike for the tree, it’s Toph and Tru, and I think it is SO sweet…

*Decorating our Tree
This is always ‘my job’. Toph is okay letting me do this one! And I don’t mind to do it. I love to put on a good pair of jammies, turn on the christmas music and enjoy the evening of putting up the tree!

Although I had lots of help from the younger boys with putting everything up,

I love this shot… Truman whispering a secret about gingerbread houses to Tucker. They have so many beautiful trees and gingerbread houses that have been generously made and donated. They are on display for people to buy (the money is then donated to the hospital). And believe me there are some beautiful ones there!

*Hanging of the special ornaments
(Another Phillips Family tradition. One special ornament is purchased every year, and then when we hang them up on the tree, we talk about what was eventful that year…)

A White, snowy Christmas!
Here are some pictures of the kids playing in the snow.

We didn’t have a lot up until right before Christmas, but then it came down, and it was cold.

We are blessed enough to live in a neighborhood with very nice neighbors and friends. Who constantly invite us in our their fun adventures…One family owns a four wheeler, and a sled was attached behind and our boys, rode and rode and rode in that sled. Our other neighbors have a snowmobile that the boys rode on for about an hour around our un-plowed circle. (The snowplows won’t plow it unless there are no cars parked on the road. There is always cars parked on the road, so it NEVER gets plowed! So it makes for a great place to go sledding behind a four wheeler, or on a snowmobile)

And of course, we always finish up the snowtime with HOT COCOA!

* Dipping Chocolates.
One of my favorite parts of Dipping with the Phillips Sisters is making the centers.

It is fun to stand around the oven, taking turns stirring the centers, and just chatting and catching up on life.

And honestly what is not to love about having a handful of chocolate? (Truman got in on the action)

And so did Tuck. (Mixing the chocolate with Grandma)
mixing Yummy, Yummy, Chocolates are an important part of Christmas!
And I love this pic. While the little boys weren’t ‘helping’ us make the chocolates, the men folk were watching them—Here is a picture of Tucker schooling his younger cousin on pbskids. Got to love it. 🙂

* The Book Find Another Phillips Family Tradition…consisting of MANY different kinds of wrapping paper, hidden books, smiles and laughter, and alot of fun..
family2tucklooktuckbooktruwrapping
Tucker got Desperaux, which was an amazing book, we just finished reading it last week. I loved it and he loved it, and Truman listened to it too, and he loved it!! Can’t wait to see the movie of this one!
desperaux
Truman got the book, The Mitten, with a mitten full of animals. I think the official count is now at 739,087 times I have read this book. Truman loves it (and now has it memorized) , and loves playing with the animals inside and out of the mitten.
mitten
I finished my book during the holiday season, The miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, and Toph got a beautiful copy of Mark Twains most popular stories.
What a fun Tradition.

*Making Gingerbread. I wasn’t going to make gingerbread this year, as it is a lengthy process, but the boys kept asking and Christmas didn’t feel like Christmas, with out the smell/taste of Gingerbread, and Tucker asked me about it quite a few times. I only did a single batch instead of 4 or 5 I usually make, so it wasn’t quite as big of a process.

Decorating/Frosting the cookies (Truman was quite liberal on the sprinkles this year, I had to laugh, because I remember that being my favorite part too!)

*Reindeer Dust
At the beginning of the season, Truman found some ‘reindeer dust’. He was infatuated with it, and asked everyday if it was the day to put out the dust (a mix of oats and glitter)

Finally Christmas Eve arrived, and it was the day. The day to sprinkle the dust, for the reindeer…I had to include these pictures, so I could remember the daily question of ‘is today the day we get to put out the reindeer dust?’

It was unfinished, Christopher did the framing, drywall, electrical (with the help of an electrician), mudding, painting, and layed the carpet. He started it two weeks before Christmas. It was finished very late Christmas Eve/or Early Christmas Morning…. The boys LOVE their own little area,

And slept in the cubby area all Christmas Break Long.

* Ice Skating Party
My mom’s Cousin Patty invited us again this year to her party. The kids love this, as they can skate using buckets to help them balance, and this year, near the end of the party Tucker skated without the buckets. That is impressive for any 6 year old! And he was pretty excited about it too! In my pregnant state, I watched from up above with my niece Eleanor, and we had a great evening!

If you made it this far, thanks for reading, I felt it was important to document this important season of our life. So much time was spent with family. It was wonderful, and although it was not documented with pictures, I want to remember the small moments too, where we spent remembering our Savior. The most important thing during this time.
Hope your season was wonderful, and you too have taken time to recover from this busy season!

One Week and Counting…

I have had one of the most wonderful weeks of my life enjoying so many small moments like these…

Thanks to so many friends and family who have taken care of my older boys, given us thoughtful gifts, brought in meals, cleaned my house, done my laundry, shopped for me, and so much more so that I can rest, heal, bond with my sweet Elliot, and enjoy these magical moments.

Thanksgiving Checklist….

Pilgrim…

check
(See the Pilgrim hat in front? It got ripped shortly after we took the picture. 🙁 I got to Truman’s Class Thanksgiving Feast to help them. I love seeing my children in their school setting, watching them interact with peers, the things they say, the way they act, what they do, the routines they follow. Oh, I can’t get enough)

Food? Turkey, Stuffing, Potatoes, Gravy, Artichokes, sparkling grape juice….

check
(A Few years ago, I realized someday (hopefully not for a long, long time) I am going to be the Matriarch in charge of putting together this grand feast. So since then, we’ve tried to make our own Turkey, and little dinner, to begin the practicing! I am no gourmet chef, but it is fun to celebrate just our little fam too!)

More Turkeys….

check.
(Every year, we’ve done this. We hang them up, and it’s fun to see how the boys writing and artwork skills have changed over the years. Plus what is Thanksgiving without a Hand print Turkey?)

Gratitude?

check.
(An important part of Thanksgiving. I’ve been trying to encourage the boys to be aware of the abundance of blessings that are around them. Pretty sure someday the real concept of gratitude will sink it, but for now, a majority of the time Tucker is grateful for Robots/Robotics and Truman for Hercules or whatever Superhero he is pretending to be at the moment. I am especially grateful for a healthy rather uneventful pregnancy, and an amazing husband who I don’t appreciate enough for all of the amazing things he does. I have so many blessings!)

Still More Turkeys?

Check
(Just kidding there not really turkeys, but they are the cutest little people I know.)

And to you, wishing you
a wonderful Thanksgiving!
THANK YOU
for being a very important part of my life.

The Baby List (TBL)

I wrote this on Monday, and somehow didn’t post it. I’m blaming it on Pregnancy Brain. That’s a good enough excuse for alot of things right now! 🙂
So about a month ago, I kind of had a realization, that ‘baby brother’ was on his way, and began a list of things I needed to have accomplished before his arrival. Somethings were pertinent to the baby, others were things that have to be done because it is the Holiday Season, or because we own a house, or because I know if I don’t get them done now, they won’t happen for a LONG time until we settle in the routine of having a new member of our family.
I’ve had a goal of getting two or three things done each week. I haven’t totally and completely met this goal, but I am trying hard. And think often about my TBL.I am hoping that posting this, will encourage me to meet my goal of two or three things off that list each week!
So here’s what I’ve gotten done so far….

#10 Neighbor Christmas Gifts purchased, and #11 wrapped, (They still need the tags (#12), and I need to write a poem (#13) but that can come another day, right?)

#8 The boys have gotten their Flu Shots (we are always SO MUCH healthier during the years we get these, and with a new baby, the less we get sick the better!)…

Funny story about this one by the way. I made the mistake of telling Truman over a month before our appointment about the shot. Big mistake. he asked me about it constantly, almost daily, until the big day. He was so worried and nervous when the day finally came. We went in, and I decided since Tucker was so calm and collected, I would have him go first. It would be a good thing for Truman. The nurse had everything ready (I am sure she had already been doing it all day), so I helped Tucker up to the table, then it became one of those moments, he realized, really realized, it was really going to happen–right then, and he didn’t want to do it. So, he started to freak out. Really freak out, then In the back of my mind, I remember that Christopher used to freak out over shots, like really freak out too, and I think, oh dear, maybe I should’ve had Truman go first.
I look over at him, his eye are as big as quarters staring at Tucker on the table, and he’s madly grasping the door knob trying to get out of the room, but not taking his eyes off of Tucker, therefore he’s unable to open the door and make a run for it. Luckily the nurse was fast, I held Tucks arms and she took his legs. He was crying before it started, but as soon as it was done he stopped, and just had tears running down his face. The anticipation was so much worse than the actual thing. Again, I look at Truman, while I am trying to console Tucker, get him off the table, Keeping an eye on Truman and trying to convince him that it will hurt just a little and be over quick. At this point, Truman’s finally taken his eyes off Tucker, and can now focus his attention to getting out of the room by opening the door, which he does easily once he can focus a little better. Truman is quick, and he was out the door, down the hall, and almost to the waiting room by the time me and my pregnant belly caught up to him. I carried him back down the hall, and he really wasn’t happy, but the nurse was quick, again she grabbed the legs and I had the arms. (Much easier to manage a 3 year old then a 5 year old) He got his shot in the leg. Truman cried for only a second, then looked at me and said, Mom it wasn’t that bad, then stopped crying. We walked out of the room with boys with smiles on their faces. The boys happily choose out Stickers, and I never would have believed the transformation that occurred, and the emotions that were felt and experienced in such a short amount of time. Definitely a relief to mark this one off our list, until next year that is 🙂

#3 Sprinkling System Drained. How nice to have a sprinkling system to be drained 🙂 (thanks to my sweetheart installing and draining)

#7 Garage Straightened (Again, a big shout out to my handsome man, couldn’t have done it with out you!) Well Actually I stayed in the house, and put away the stuff that was supposed to be inside, but somehow had found a home in the garage, while he and the boys straightened out there. Nice to have such a helpful boys, eh? Now that it’s straightened, it makes it easier to get things out of the attic, like….

#2 Crib Down (it’s out of the attic, just staring at me, it’s SO banged up, (we got it used—after 5 kids who’ve used it, and so many moves, It’s seen better days) it needs a little face lift, I’m waiting for a really warm day to paint it. *or recruit Toph to paint it*

Here’s to getting more done this week!
